Q.) As you may be aware unfortunately we have the National lottery. From the proceeds 28p from each pound is used for good causes, e.g. educational grants for starting up courses etc.

One of the latest schemes is to promote healthy eating within young children, therefore at schools the children will be given fruit that will be funded by the National lottery funding.

As Muslims, are we allowed to take benefit from this funding to run courses? Secondly, are our children who are attending these schools allowed to eat the fruit they have been given?

A.) It is not permissible to take any benefit from the national lottery even though the proceeds will go to a good cause.

Children should be educated to abstain from eating such fruits. Muslims should discuss the matter with the management of the school about the Islamic perspective of lottery. And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best
